The New England Patriots have high hopes for Gabe Jacas, and with great talent comes great responsibility.
That's why head coach Mike Vrabel won't take things lightly with his second-round rookie. Instead, he'll push it more than other guys, even if that means giving him an earful on the sidelines on national television.
That's what happened in Jacas' preseason debut. When asked about that heated exchange, the Patriots head coach doubled down on his criticism of the young pass-rusher.
“It needs to be better,” Vrabel said. “It was better whenever we practiced, Saturday, I guess, than it was in the game. We pointed some things out to him in the game.”

Vrabel called out Jacas for allowing backups to block him and manhandle him on special teams. That said, he also acknowledged Jacas ultimately turned the corner and showed more teeth after the ear-pull, and he's been more consistent in practice since.
“I think it was cool for him to make those corrections. Look at some of the body positions that we feel like he should be in and he was really conscious of those and I saw those translating in just a short amount of time from the meeting after the game to Saturday’s practice,” Vrabel said.
Jacas missed spring workouts and crucial classroom time while dealing with a contract dispute, and it inevitably set him back a bit. The Patriots need as much help as they can get in the pass-rushing department, and while it looks like the rookie will have to earn his stripes on special teams at first, getting him up to speed will be crucial to make up for some of their injuries and departures.
