The New England Patriots are coming off their worst two-year stretch since the early-1990's. They named Mike Vrabel the 16th coach in franchise history as they look to turn things around.
While the front office used free agency to significantly improve their roster, the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year is looking to change the culture. Vrabel set the tempo for the season during his first time formally addressing the players.
Speaking to the team at the beginning of offseason programs, the Patriots head coach discussed his rules, stating:
One is respect of team. Respect the football team and the people that are here. The second one is, I'd like you to have, when we're in a meeting - I know what your style may be - just pull your hood down in a meeting.
Be on time. And if I can't be on time... communicate... After four or five times, that starts wearing off. This is just a once in a while.
Just leave the cell phone in your bag, but just put the phone away. If it rings, don't start coughing. I've been in this league for 25 years.
Vrabel shared that his goal is to build a program that the players, coaches and staff are proud to be apart of and protect. He added:
The training staff, equipment staff, the kitchen staff, these people are all here to... help you do your job. They aren't here to be your valet, to be your housekeeper, to be your maid, to be your butler... We're going to treat those people with the utmost respect.
Vrabel will look to build on his previous success coaching in the NFL. He posted a 54-45 record in six seasons leading the Tennessee Titans. The team reached the postseason three times, making the AFC Championship Game in 2019.
Mike Vrabel's first speech to Patriots players has gone viral leaving many fans impressed with his no-BS attitude:
