Mike Vrabel shares awkward Urban Meyer story

Urban Meyer’s short-lived stint in the NFL continues to haunt him.

Former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel appeared on the “ManningCast” for Monday’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Baltimore Ravens at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

Before Vrabel went on the air, prior “ManningCast” guest Owen Wilson had opened up about Meyer not knowing who Wilson was when Meyer coached him during a celebrity football game.

Vrabel heard Wilson’s story and later said that he could relate to the Hollywood actor. Vrabel shared a similar interaction with the former Jacksonville Jaguars coach.

“I can relate with Owen Wilson, I was listening earlier. Urban Meyer asked him, ‘Do I know you?’ I was coaching the Titans and he was coaching the Jaguars, and he actually said the same thing to me. I said, ‘Yeah, I’m the head coach of the Titans and I worked for you for two years.”

Vrabel retired from the NFL in 2011 to become the linebackers coach at Ohio State. When Meyer took over as head coach of the Buckeyes later that year, he kept Vrabel on his staff as the defensive line coach.

Vrabel coached under Meyer until the end of the 2013 season. But despite Vrabel working under Meyer and later finding success on his own, it was apparently not enough for Meyer to remember him.

Meyer spent just one season in the pro ranks when he coached the Jaguars to a 2-11 record back in 2021. He was fired before even being able to finish his first season.

The campaign was riddled with poor execution on the field and controversy off of it.
