Mike Vrabel’s Drake Maye Decision Speaks Volumes

Why This Makes Sense for the New England Patriots

Maye is no longer a young quarterback trying to find his way in the NFL. After having a breakout 2025 season in which he produced 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns with just eight interceptions while also leading the Patriots to the Super Bowl he showed he can be counted on as their franchise quarterback.

While the biggest case for Maye to be playing in the preseason would be for him to establish chemistry with AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs as his new receivers, there is more risk than reward starting him. The in-game playing time would be great, but with Maye having progressed at the level he did last season a few preseason reps won’t provide enough value to outweigh the risks of starting him.

Instead, Maye will gain the reps needed in joint practices against the Colts. But for now, it is clear Maye won’t be starting until Week 1.
