A former Philadelphia Eagles running back's 2025 campaign is over as Miles Sanders is opting for surgery on his knee and ankle.

According to Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, Sanders will miss the rest of the season, having undergone a similar surgery to Trevon Diggs in January.

Tough break for the former Eagles running back

Sanders spent the first four years of his career in Philadelphia after being drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Sanders' best season of his career came in 2022, when he rushed for over 1,000 yards and eleven touchdowns while earning Pro Bowl honors.

Despite a successful 2022, Sanders has dealt with injuries throughout his career, and 2025 seems to be the culmination of that. Sanders had injury-shortened seasons in 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024. Despite his injuries in Philadelphia, Sanders still managed to sign a four-year, $25.4 million contract with the Carolina Panthers. However, he was released in March of 2025 and signed with Dallas on a one-year deal.

Sanders did face his former team in Week 1 when the Cowboys came to visit the Eagles at The Linc and lost 24-20. He had four rushing attempts for 53 yards, including a 49-yard run, and had a key fumble in the third quarter that prevented Dallas from scoring in the red zone.

With injuries forcing Sanders to miss a significant amount of time for the past three seasons, and five out of the seven seasons of his career, Sanders' career may be in jeopardy. As an injury-prone running back creeping up to his age-30 season, Sanders' market for additional employment could be dwindling.

While Sanders' career has not gone the way he's wanted, the Eagles have found plenty of success at the running back position since Sanders' departure. In 2023, the Eagles traded for D'Andre Swift, who put together a Pro Bowl season in his lone season in Philadelphia. In 2024, well, the rest is history with Saquon Barkley putting together one of the best seasons in NFL history for a running back.

Despite injuries, Sanders has still managed to earn $19,931,079 in his NFL career, along with amassing 4,462 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns across 88 games since coming into the league in 2019.
