“In Pittsburgh I definitely regret the way I handled the situation,” Fitzpatrick said. “When I first got there they just plugged me in at post safety, half safety. And I played well there. After awhile quarterbacks aren’t going to be throwing you the ball a whole lot and I kind of got pushed into that role.”

Fitzpatrick explained that playing primarily in one role prevented him from displaying the versatility that helped make him one of the league’s most highly regarded defensive backs.

“People forgot that what I was known for was my versatility and doing different things,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’m a good football player so no matter where you put me on the field I’m going to be a good football player. But I think where my capabilities are maximized is when I could do different things.”

Fitzpatrick’s career eventually brought him back to Miami before another major move this offseason. The Dolphins traded the veteran safety to the Jets as part of their extensive roster overhaul ahead of the 2026 season.

His departure comes as Miami undergoes a significant reset under a new regime, with the organization making several high-profile personnel moves as it attempts to reshape the roster.
