Minkah Fitzpatrick trashes Jets when discussing defensive struggles

New York Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is making sure the team’s reputation for failure sticks, even though he is now a member of the organization.

Fitzpatrick was asked about the team’s struggles on defense following a 38-33 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. After the defense gave up scores on three of the team’s last four stands, Fitzpatrick did not mince words when asked what contributed to the failure.

“I think we had some bad penalties, bad mistakes. Jets being Jets.,” Fitzpatrick said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.

It’s not exactly the assessment Jets fans would like hearing from one of their players, even if it has a grain of truth to it. It is a bit like the infamous “the Browns is the Browns” quote if it had come from an actual Cleveland player.

Still, the Jets’ long-standing failures invite such commentary. Sunday’s loss dropped them to 2-6 on the season. Head coach Aaron Glenn is already on the hot seat, and things do not look to be improving for the embattled roster. The defense, in particular, has allowed 92 points over the last three games, which has only further damaged Glenn’s credibility.

Fitzpatrick, a former All-Pro, is in his first season with the Jets. He has 45 total tackles on the season.
