Browner’s passing comes just a day after the Vikings announced the death of four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Jeff Siemon at the age of 75. Siemon spent his entire career in Minnesota, from 1972 to 1982.
The Vikings drafted Joey Browner in the first round (19th overall) in 1983. He helped them to three straight playoff appearances from 1987 to 1989, including a surprise trip to the NFC Championship Game in the former year.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Browner’s family, friends and the Vikings organization during this difficult time.
Per Pro Football Reference , only four Vikings players had more interceptions than Browner’s 37. Hall of Famer Paul Krause leads the franchise with 53, followed by Bobby Bryant (51), Ed Sharockman (40) and Harrison Smith (39).
Aside from his six Pro Bowl nods, Browner was a four-time First-team All-Pro and named to the 1980s All-Decade Team. Browner was named to the Vikings’ Ring of Honor in 2013, becoming the 21st player to join the club.
Along with his 37 interceptions as a Viking, Browner recorded 17 forced fumbles and 9.5 sacks with the franchise.
