Minnesota Vikings Quarterback J.J. McCarthy In Concussion Protocol

Just when you thought the Minnesota Vikings’ season couldn’t get any more bizarre, it did. After a dismal 23-6 shellacking by the Green Bay Packers, Quarterback J.J. McCarthy reported concussion symptoms. That’s right, on the flight home. You can’t make this stuff up.

Head Coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed the news on Monday. “After completing those tests, our training staff and doctors and medical team have decided that the right place for him is to put him in the protocol for now,” O’Connell said.

This isn’t just a bump in the road; it is another pothole on a highway to nowhere for the 4-7 Vikings. The timing is almost comical. It comes after a performance where McCarthy managed to complete 12 passes for a whopping 87 yards and 2 interceptions. It is the kind of stat line that makes you check if the numbers were entered correctly. His QBR of 24.9 after six starts puts him in some truly cringeworthy historical company.

The McCarthy Dilemma: What Now For Minnesota?

The concussion adds another layer of misery to what’s been a tough go for McCarthy. He already missed five games earlier this season with a high ankle sprain, a stint that saw veteran Carson Wentz step in before his own season-ending shoulder surgery. The Vikings’ quarterback room is starting to look like the set of a hospital drama.

Now, with McCarthy’s status for the Week 13 game against the Seattle Seahawks in jeopardy, the Vikings are scraping the bottom of the barrel. If he’s not cleared, the reins will be handed to Max Brosmer, an undrafted rookie. Talk about being thrown into the fire. Brosmer’s next NFL snap will be his first, and it could be against one of the league’s more formidable defenses. Good luck, kid.

This whole situation leaves Vikings fans and the front office in a bind. Is McCarthy the guy? The jury is not just out; it’s packed its bags and gone on vacation. His play has been less than inspiring, and these injuries are preventing any chance of seeing consistent growth.

The team is caught between wanting to evaluate their young quarterback and winning a football game. At this point, they’re doing neither. The season is slipping away, and the future under center looks murkier than ever. The only thing clear in Minnesota right now is the mounting frustration.
