The Kansas City Chiefs are in danger of losing three games in a row for the first time since Patrick Mahomes became the team's starting quarterback.
They were blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX, then fell to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 27-21. Kansas City will take on the Eagles once again in Week 2, aiming to avoid the dreaded 0-2 start.
If the Chiefs are going to beat Philadelphia on Sunday, they're going to have to play with a high level of energy. We heard all offseason long — and witnessed it in the game — that the Eagles played with more energy and intensity than K.C. did during the Super Bowl. Those same reasons were repeated following the loss to the Chargers last week.
Sometimes coaches don't put together the best gameplans, and other times players don't have the equal amount of talent as the guy lined up across from them. However, energy is something that can be controlled and is up to the individual. The stage doesn't get much bigger than a Super Bowl or an international season opener, so the Chiefs lacking energy in those games should be concerning.
Here are some quotes from K.C.'s top leaders, starting with Andy Reid directly after the team's loss to L.A.
"I've got to make sure I get my team in a better state, coming out, playing with more emotion," Reid said. We were a little flat that first half, and that cost us. There were some good things in there, but again, we got to make sure we take care of business with that, and that's my responsibility."
Mahomes also noted the Chiefs' lack of energy on Friday night.
"They (the Chargers) definitely came out with more energy than we did," Mahomes said. "In this league, everybody's too good for you to not match the energy of your opponent. I think we learned a valuable lesson today. We got to be better from the get-go, from the start, we're not going to be able to just come back and win every single game."
Finally, tight end Travis Kelce had this to say on his New Heights podcast.
"We got to fix a lot of things, both offensively and defensively," Kelce said. "We got to get this thing going, man. We got to get this train running a little bit more. The biggest thing for me is energy, man. We got to come out with energy. I know Arrowhead (Stadium) is going to bring it. It's going to be fun to feel that atmosphere, but unless the players are on the field doing it, Arrowhead is not going to be a fun atmosphere, man. We got to bring it knowing that we got the champs coming in."
The good news is that it appears everybody within the Chiefs' organization is on the same page about upping the energy moving forward. Not only do they need to begin the game with intensity, but maintain it throughout. If it's an issue once again during the home opener, the 2025 season will be full of frustrations.
