NBC hires Jason Garrett to replace Drew Brees for NFL 'FNIA' coverage

Rumors and reports on the subject were confirmed last week when NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua announced that New Orleans Saints legend and future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees wouldn't be returning for Notre Dame Fighting Irish and NFL broadcasts later this year.

Brees' replacement is another name familiar to football fans.

According to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, NBC has hired former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett to serve as an analyst for "Football Night in America" broadcasts this fall. Garrett, who is currently calling United States Football League action for the network, will work alongside Maria Taylor, Tony Dungy and Chris Simms in the NBC studio for the weekly shows that precede "Sunday Night Football" games.

Garrett spent less than 10 full campaigns as Dallas head coach and accumulated an overall regular-season record of 85-67 but went just 2-3 in the postseason before he and the Cowboys parted ways in early 2020. He then became offensive coordinator with the New York Giants but was fired last November after fewer than two seasons in that role.

"I’m truly humbled and thrilled to be joining the Football Night team and continuing my broadcasting career with NBC Sports, who have been fantastic to work with on the USFL," Garrett said for an official release. "I intend to share my life-long passion for football and utilize my experience as both an NFL coach and quarterback to try to explain the game and break down the matchups for our audience every Sunday night. I can’t wait to get started."
