Newly acquired Denver Broncos wide receiver Jaylen Waddle is clearly hyped to be reunited with friend and Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II. That said, some understandably have wondered how perceived No. 1 Denver receiver Courtland Sutton feels about eventually being asked to share targets with his new teammate.
While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Waddle seemed to send a message to Sutton about what their working relationship will be like.
"I don’t think there are No. 1s," Waddle said regarding who will lead the 2026 Broncos in targets, per Nick Kosmider of The Athletic. "Everyone is here to make plays and try to win. That’s ultimately the goal for the team and for the organization. …I just look at it as a new opportunity to go out there with a new team in a great place, play (alongside) great talent and help out as best I can."
ESPN stats show that Sutton led the 2025 Broncos with 74 receptions, 124 targets, 1,017 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns. To compare, Waddle led the 2025 Miami Dolphins with 100 targets, 910 receiving yards and six receiving scores (tied with tight end Darren Waller).
In the spring of 2024, Waddle and the Dolphins agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $84.75M. To compare, Sutton signed a four-year, $92M extension last offseason.
While the two players have millions of reasons to make things work, the Broncos said plenty about how valuable they think Waddle is when they sent the Dolphins a 2026 first-round draft selection, a third-rounder and a fourth-rounder to acquire him.
For now, Waddle is focusing only on the positive aspects of the latest chapter of his football journey.
"It’s exciting just playing with great players," Waddle added about joining a team that fell one win short of playing in the Super Bowl earlier this winter. "Everyone is talking about how great and close the team is, so I’m excited to be around the guys and get to know them, and them get to know me and go from there."
Time will tell if everyone involved with the Denver offense will still feel such a level of excitement about working together come December.
