Much has been made about the conditioning issues around wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. It's a big reason why the San Francisco 49ers got rid of the player. Although it's something to monitor, general manager Adam Peters is confident that these issues can become a thing of the past with the Washington Commanders.
And based on the physique Samuel showed off during the organized team activities session open to the media, it's not hard to see why.
Samuel looked a lot leaner and stronger than anything fans saw during the previous campaign. He's heard the critics and also knows the Niners gave up on him with one year remaining on his deal. This provided some extra motivation, and the Commanders were there to help immediately after the trade became official.
The former second-round pick, who looked incredibly sharp and fit during drills, revealed that Washington quickly put together a strength and conditioning program designed to ensure he hits the ground running. Samuel is putting in the work, and the Commanders stand to benefit greatly if the same trend continues.
Being in better shape. We were just training every day in here. We kind of built a program for me to go by. It's gonna help.Deebo Samuel Sr.

Whether things became stale to the point Samuel was unmotivated last season in San Francisco is anyone's guess. There was still mutual respect between the player and the organization. But both decided that it was time for a fresh start.
The Commanders' improved culture, winning environment, and general approach to preparations are having the desired effect on Samuel. He's refocused and ready to help quarterback Jayden Daniels cement his status as the league's newest superstar. And if he performs well enough, another lucrative contract will be available with the Commanders or elsewhere in 2026.
Some skeptics think Samuel's best days are behind him. The Niners seem to agree with this notion, considering they're eating $34.1 million in dead money next season just to have him off the books. But if these new fitness levels can be maintained or enhanced in the coming months, the chances of him bouncing back are high.
Samuel is on a mission this season. Looking at the shape he's in to start offseason workouts, it might not be long before the South Carolina graduate puts the NFL on notice once again.
