New details arise for the Tennessee Titans GM search as candidate interviews begin

The Tennessee Titans are in need of a new General Manager to replace the recently fired Ran Carthon and the search is well underway.

New details about the interview process and job description have recently been made public. There's even a new leading candidate in Tennessee according to reports from early Friday morning.

Here's everything we know about where the Titans are at in the process of conducting GM interviews.

Tennessee got some good news earlier in the week after the NFL reviewed the job description of the GM job opening. As first reported by Jonathan Jones, the NFL deemed the Titans' vacant position as a "primary football executive post."

This means that any executive without a GM title can interview with the Titans and cannot be blocked by their current employer.

The NFL has rules and regulations in place to ensure that coaches and executives who are "poached" from other organizations are not making a lateral move. You can climb the ladder and jump to another team, but it must be viewed as a promotion from your current position. This ruling gave the Titans a lot of flexibility, even if it's an inaccurate assessment by the NFL.

From everything we have gathered about the Titans' new organizational hierarchy, President of Football Operations Chad Brinker will be the one calling the shots. The new GM will lead the way in scouting and evaluating talent, but Brinker ultimately has the final say when it comes to all roster decisions.

With that in mind, I'm not sure I'd describe the new GM as the Titans' "primary football executive post," but hey...whatever helps the team find the best candidate.

Albert Breer came in with a report on Friday morning that the Titans' organizational structure will be the same as it was last year. "Brian Callahan will report to the general manager, who'll run the draft and free agency, and oversee scouting, medical, strength-and-conditioning," Breer reported.

I'm not really buying that. The Titans made it clear when they fired Carthon that there would be a shift in the power structure. Decisions in the draft and free agency will be made by Brinker, not the new GM.

But by putting this out there, the Titans are maintaining the facade that the new GM is the "primary football executive post," therefore giving them more freedom and protecting the organization against potential Rooney Rule violations.

Breer also shared that the first round of interviews would be held virtually. Reggie McKenzie, Thomas Dimitroff, and John Spytek will all interview on Friday.

Ed Dodds, Matt Berry, Terrance Gray, and Catherine Hickman will be on Saturday while Mike Borgonzi and Ian Cunningham go on Sunday. It's a busy and important weekend for the Titans.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Reggie McKenzie is a name to look out for. McKenzie is expected to have a lot of support and is currently viewed as the Titans' leading candidate. McKenzie was the GM for the Oakland Raiders from 2012-2018 and now works as a Senior Personnel Executive for the Miami Dolphins.
