New England Patriots Pushed to Pursue Blockbuster Trade for $72 Million Star

The New England Patriots have quite a few needs ahead of NFL free agency opening next week. Thankfully, they will have the means to go out and pursue talent.

Heading into free agency, the Patriots have the most cap space available to spend. Mike Vrabel and company will have the ability to pursue any player that they want.

What do they need? Quite simply, they need a little bit of almost everything.

Offensively, New England needs to add talent at wide receiver and on the offensive line. Defensively, they could use a better pass rush, a linebacker, a cornerback, and possibly a safety.

With that being said, the Patriots are being urged to pursue a blockbuster trade for a $72 million star.

Mark Daniels of MassLive took a look at some of the top potential targets for New England this offseason. He believes that DK Metcalf should be their No. 1 wide receiver option.

"It’s not often that legitimate receivers are available. That’s why the Patriots should strike hard and trade for Metcalf," Daniels wrote.

"The 27-year-old requested a trade out of Seattle on Wednesday. He would likely cost a high draft pick and want a big new contract. The Patriots were willing to part with a second-round pick for Brandon Aiyuk, who they would’ve paid $35 million per season. Metcalf would give Maye a bona fide No. 1 receiver."

Metcalf recently requested a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. His asking price is quite high, according to reports, but that could come down.

If the Patriots were able to acquire Metcalf, they would be throwing a major weapon and supporting piece into the mix for young quarterback Drake Maye.

During the 2024 NFL season with the Seahawks, Metcalf played in 15 games, catching 66 passes for 992 yards and five touchdowns. He will be heading into the final year of his most recent three-year, $72 million contract, which would indicate that New England would have to lock him up to a long-term deal as well.
