Are the New England Patriots thinking of firing Mike Vrabel?
Unlikely. But if a certain source is to be believed, they’re at least preparing themselves for the possibility of an exit. And they already have someone in mind.
Vrabel is heading into his second year as the team’s head coach and is coming off a Super Bowl appearance. Reaching the final hurdle in your first year coaching a team that previously struggled to make the playoffs usually spells job security. It also means your bosses don’t even entertain the thought of lining up a replacement.
Getting pictured cozying up to a reporter and triggering suspicions of an affair that’s allegedly at least six years in the making? That can definitely complicate things.
However, as the NFL has pointed out, it’s not a violation of any conduct policy.
The Vrable exposé necessitated family counseling, which resulted in him missing the third day of the NFL Draft. He has since returned to work.
“As I said the other day, I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me that I can possibly give them. In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend,” he said ahead of the draft. “This is something that I have given a lot of thought to and is something I would advise a player to do if I was counseling them.
“I have always wanted to lead by example, and I believe this is what I have to do to be the best husband, father and coach that I possibly can be. This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is one that I know will make me a better person. I appreciate the support that everyone has given me and promise a stronger resolve as a result.”
Vrabel’s job isn’t thought to be in danger, but it’s reported that they have someone in mind to take over should it come to that.
According to a team insider, it’s Mike Tomlin.
“The Krafts are extremely loyal and have no intention of firing Mike, nor do they want to see him quit over all this drama,” the source told the Daily Mail.
“But if these upcoming few months go haywire, and if they are put in a situation of no return, either with the team not doing well or the drama of Mike’s family issues taking over and forcing a decision on Mike’s coaching future, the one person that they would seek to replace him would be Mike Tomlin.”
Tomlin resigned as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of last season. He has since joined NBC as a TV analyst.
The Patriots job would likely tempt him should a vacancy open up, which is unlikely to be the case.
