New Miami HC Mike McDaniel 'bullish' on Tua Tagovailoa
Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

There has been a lot of talk over the past two years about how the Miami Dolphins are not sold on Tua Tagovailoa, but apparently their new head coach is.

Mike McDaniel was hired as the head coach of the Dolphins largely because of his history of improving offenses. Some have wondered if he will want to draft and develop a quarterback, but he insists he is excited about working with Tagovailoa. Peter Schrager of NFL Network said on Monday that McDaniel told him he is excited to “maximize” the talents of the former Alabama star.

The Dolphins have invested a lot in Tagovailoa. They used the No. 5 overall pick on him in 2020, and they have committed to him over the past two seasons. Tua supposedly did not get along with former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. That may have been one of the reasons Miami fired Flores despite the team’s success on the field.

Tagovailoa had some good games last season, but he finished with modest numbers — 2,653 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

McDaniel is just 38, but he comes from the already successful Mike Shanahan coaching tree. He should be able to elevate Tagovailoa’s game and make Miami’s entire offense better.
