New York Giants’ Daniel Jones Listed as One of NFL’s Worst QBs

After the Giants passed on selecting a quarterback, in favor of taking former LSU deep-threat Malik Nabers to add some explosiveness to the wide receiving corps during the NFL Draft, it might be now or never for Jones.

Jones is looking to return from a torn ACL suffered in Week 9 of the 2023 campaign, but is on the field during the team’s OTAs, which is an encouraging sign in his recovery from the injury.

However, not everyone is bullish on Jones’ upside for the Giants in 2024 and beyond.

Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema put together his rankings of all 32 quarterbacks ahead of the upcoming season, with Jones listed 29th, the lowest among quarterbacks who began last season as their team’s Week 1 starters.

“Jones was the third-ranked quarterback in PFF grade on his own team last year,” Sikkema writes for PFF.  “Behind Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito. Jones played in just six games in 2023 and was basically either elite or one of the worst-graded quarterbacks in a given week, with no in-between.

“He is a good athlete whose rushing production and ability to escape the pocket have always been a big part of his game. But in four of his five years with the Giants, he has finished with more turnover-worthy plays than big-time throws. His average depth of target has also been low over the past three seasons.”

Jones, chosen by the Giants with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft has made just one postseason appearance with one playoff victory.

It might take at least one playoff win for general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, neither of whom were in the building when Jones was drafted, to convince the Giants not to take on of the top quarterbacks available in next year’s draft.
