New York Giants owner John Mara set the tone for the offseason when he brought back head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen for another season by claiming: "It better not take too long, because I've just about run out of patience."
With Mara's demand for immediate results, it became clear whether or not the Giants planned to use the No. 3 overall pick on a rookie quarterback, they were going to sign a veteran quarterback.
Now the Giants have that in Russell Wilson, who they're signing to a one-year deal worth $21m with $10.5m guaranteed.
The Giants were also involved in the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes, who is expected to end up with the Pittsburgh Steelers or Minnesota Vikings.
But as the Giants turn the page to focus on life with Wilson, fans are wondering what can they expect from the quarterback who has fallen short with the Denver Broncos and Steelers.
To say Russell Wilson is washed would certainly be a stretch. There was a time where the Pittsburgh Steelers of all teams, were averaging over 30 points a game and Russ was nearing career highs in passing yards.
The George Pickens injury and three games in 10 days against the Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs catalyzed the beginning of the end for the Steelers. Russ can still distribute, throw his moon ball and attack the perimeter at a high rate. Just don’t ask him to throw the ball over the middle.
Beyond the end of season collapse, Russ and the Steelers coaching staff (offensive coordinator Arthur Smith especially) started budding heads.
In fact, if not for the whole dilemma, there is a chance that Wilson would have been signed as soon as Fields left for New York. There is a tendency for he and his coordinators to not leave on the best terms but the Giants are looking to win now and Wilson can get that done.
Daboll is obviously on the hot seat entering the 2025 NFL season. With Wilson on board, it'll be a big test for him to tailor the offense around his strengths. How can they keep him doing what he does best? Rolling out and throwing that deep ball that's made him dangerous in the past while steering clear from middle of the field throws.
If Daboll fails to make it work, it seems like the Giants are ready to turn the page and move into a new era in 2026. The stakes are high.
