This season has gone about as poorly as it could have for the New York Jets. Their decision to sign Justin Fields to a two-year deal—featuring $30 million in guaranteed money—flopped completely, as head coach Aaron Glenn decided the team’s best bet to win games was to replace Fields with 36-year-old Tyrod Taylor in Week 11. Taylor has since been replaced by rookie UDFA Brady Cook, who has thrown one touchdown pass and five interceptions across his two starts.
With the Jets' season lost, head coach Aaron Glenn has shut down star wide receiver Garrett Wilson for the rest of the season, per Jets reporter Zack Rosenblatt.
Wilson finished the year with 36 catches for 395 yards and four touchdowns across his seven games played. Now, he’ll have the chance to take some extra time to get healthy and prepare for next season, likely featuring a new face under center.
Wilson had an impressive start to the year, especially considering his quarterback situation. For the first five weeks of the season—his only healthy stretch—Wilson ranked sixth in the NFL in receiving yards, tied for second in receptions, and tied for fourth in receiving touchdowns, per PFF.
Wilson was the lone standout in a receiving corps that hasn’t had a single player eclipse the 500-yard mark through Week 14. The Jets' need to draft a young star at quarterback this offseason is obvious, but adding another receiver to ease the pressure on Wilson should also be a priority this offseason. One player who could fit that mold is current San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is expected to be traded this offseason.
Either way, shutting Wilson down is the right call. The Jets are in evaluation mode, trying to determine which players are building blocks for the future. Wilson is one of those cornerstones, so there’s no reason to risk further injury to win a couple of games that would only take New York further from the first overall pick.
