NFC East team should be aggressive in pursuit of Brian Thomas Jr.

The 2025 season has been a humbling reality check for the Washington Commanders (3-5).

Last year was magical, with quarterback Jayden Daniels taking the NFL by storm as a rookie, leading Washington to the playoffs and an NFC Championship Game appearance.

Everything went just about as well as it possibly could have for the Commanders in 2024, but that certainly hasn’t been the case this season.

Daniels has dealt with a knee and hamstring injury that's forced him to miss three starts, and even when healthy, it’s been much more of a struggle for the offense. Part of that can be attributed to wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel also having been sidelined with various ailments.

A healthy Daniels with his full arsenal of weapons could change things in Washington, but the playoffs have already started to slip out of reach, so barring a miraculous second-half run, the focus ahead of the upcoming trade deadline should be on 2026 and beyond.

By no means should general manager Adam Peters give up on this year and sell. Rather, he should prioritize targeting players that fit their 24-year-old franchise quarterback’s timeline. That’s easier said than done, although one name has emerged in rumors that would fit the mold perfectly for the Commanders, and that’s Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

Brian Thomas Jr. should be a prime target for Washington

Over the weekend, insider Dianna Russini reported that the Jaguars were at least willing to listen on trade offers for their second-year wideout.

That news was a surprise to many, though it’s been a bumpy year for Thomas Jr., and the fact that they’re even willing to entertain moving him signals that things aren’t all smooth right now in Jacksonville.

The 2024 first-round pick (23rd overall) has seen his numbers take a significant hit in 2025 after an extremely productive rookie campaign. Thomas Jr.’s receiving yards per game are down from 75.4 to 52.1 through seven games this season as he’s dealt with drops and a recent injury.

Given all of that, the Jaguars don’t appear to view the 23-year-old as untouchable, and that should have the Commanders ready to pounce on the opportunity to acquire him.

Samuel is a pending free agent who will turn 30 in January and who is often dealing with injuries because of his physical style of play. McLaurin is 30 years old himself. Behind these two, it gets thin quickly in Washington, and what they desperately need is a jolt of youth to their playmaking group, something Thomas Jr. would provide.

Not to mention the college connection he and Daniels had at LSU, which you have to imagine would lead Thomas Jr. to be very interested in playing with his former quarterback. Given that he may be somewhat disgruntled in Jacksonville, this could play a huge factor in where he could wind up and his performance when he arrives.

The odds of the Jaguars giving up on such a talented young receiver remain slim, but whether it's before next week's Nov. 4 trade deadline or in the offseason, the Commanders need to be all over the potential to bring him to Washington.
