NFC Notes: Luther Burden, Jahmyr Gibbs, Bears, Lions, Packers
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Bears

Bears WR Luther Burden III enters the second year of his career and has been impressing teammates in training camp. Veteran CB Tyrique Stevenson praised Burden’s ability to get himself open and attack different coverages.

“He’ll give you everything,” Stevenson said, via Dan Weiderer of The Athletic. “If you’re (playing) too high and he wants to get under, he’ll get up under. And now you’re chasing him across the field. If you’re too low, he’ll take the top off. Luther, to me, is a complete receiver. And he’s aggressive to the ball.”

  • Per ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, Bears third-round WR Zavion Thomas isn’t expected to miss much time after suffering a knee injury during a seven-on-seven period in Sunday’s practice. Cronin is told he’s dealing with knee soreness and is likely to be day-to-day.

Lions

Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs signed a three-year extension with Detroit but wasn’t prepared for the type of stress that the negotiation process would have on him.

“This process has been extremely stressful,” Gibbs said, via the team’s website. “I just wanted to play ball. I missed being out there with my teammates and my coaches and it’s just fun being out there now with my pads. It feels a lot better.”

  • The Lions signed Gibbs to a three-year, $67.5 million contract extension on August 7, with $51.5 million in guarantees, including $34 million in new money guarantees and $37.7 million fully guaranteed at signing through a $15 million signing bonus, his 2026 and 2027 salaries, a $10.033 million 2027 option bonus, and $8.25 million of his 2028 salary.
  • Gibbs will have another $2.25 million of his 2028 salary become fully guaranteed if he is on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2027 league year, while $8 million of his 2029 salary becomes fully guaranteed on the 3rd day of the 2028 league year and another $3.5 million becomes fully guaranteed on the 3rd day of the 2029 league year.
  • The contract also includes a $1 million roster bonus if Gibbs is on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2030 league year, while the extension increases his 2026 salary cap charge by $3 million and reduces his 2027 cap charge by $8.02 million. (OTC)

Packers

  • Packers OC Adam Stenavich on if he has faith that RB MarShawn Lloyd can stay healthy: “Every day he’s out there and doing it, I have a little bit more. He needs to carry the ball. He hasn’t done it much.” (Demovsky)
  • Packers OL Anthony Belton believes that his demotion from the top five linemen means that he needs improvement in pass protection at both guard and tackle. (Schneidman)
  • Packers TE Josh Whyle‘s neck injury is not currently considered to be a long-term or significant one. (Wood)
  • Packers DT Javon Hargrave says the knee injury that put him on the PUP list was just a “flare-up” from offseason conditioning: “If we were playing tomorrow, I’d be playing tomorrow.” (Wood)
  • Packers DE Micah Parsons called Week 6 against the Cowboys the most optimistic return date from his torn ACL. (Clayton Holloway)
