For years, football gaming fans have been waiting for the return of NFL 2K. Ever since Take-Two Interactive announced a new partnership with the NFL back in 2020, many believed the beloved football franchise was finally on its way back. Now, recent comments from Take-Two leadership suggest those hopes may have once again hit a wall.

During a recent interview with Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the status of the NFL license tied to 2K. According to Zelnick, the company’s plans ultimately failed to come together creatively.

“What we hoped would come to fruition creatively did not,” Zelnick said during the interview. “Some of the stuff we tried to do didn’t work out creatively.”

The comments quickly caught the attention of football gaming fans, especially after Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw shared additional discussion surrounding the situation. While no official cancellation announcement has been made, the latest update paints a discouraging picture for players who have spent years waiting on a true NFL 2K revival.

Back in March 2020, Take-Two and 2K announced a multi-year agreement with the NFL that would allow the publisher to once again use official NFL teams and player licenses. The deal was specifically focused on non-simulation football experiences, marking the first time 2K had access to NFL branding since the mid-2000s.

That announcement immediately sparked excitement because NFL 2K5 remains one of the most beloved football games ever released. The title was praised for its gameplay depth, presentation, franchise features, and competition with Madden during its era. More than two decades later, many fans still view NFL 2K5 as a benchmark sports game.

For now, the long-awaited return of NFL 2K appears to be back in limbo after years of anticipation from football gaming fans. While Take-Two has not officially shut the door on future NFL projects, the latest comments suggest the comeback many hoped for never fully came together behind the scenes.
