NFL Analysis Explains Saints’ Dire Situation and Why They Need to Rebuild in 2025

The New Orleans Saints are at a crossroads entering the 2025 NFL season, with analysts urging the franchise to embrace a full rebuild. Years of salary cap mismanagement and aging core players have left the team struggling to maintain competitiveness in an increasingly demanding league.

The team’s quarterback situation is a glaring issue, with rookie Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler offering unproven options under center. This instability is compounded by a roster that lacks depth at key positions, including wide receiver and defensive back. Alvin Kamara, one of the team’s few bright spots, is now 30 years old and nearing the twilight of his career.

Long-standing salary cap issues further complicate matters, with New Orleans projected to be $24.5 million over the cap in 2026. This financial strain limits immediate solutions through free agency, forcing the team to focus on drafting and developing young talent. Analysts have pointed to New Orleans’ need for a top quarterback prospect, such as Cade Klubnik, to serve as the cornerstone of the rebuild.

The offensive line offers some hope, with multiple first-round picks anchoring the unit. However, the defense faces significant turnover, with stalwarts like Cameron Jordan and Demario Davis nearing the end of their careers. Without impactful draft classes and strategic roster moves, New Orleans risks being mired in mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

New Orleans may need to start rebuilding in 2025 before it’s too late. This is detailed more in an analysis by Gary Davenport for Bleacher Report.

For years, New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis  stubbornly refused to blow up the roster and rebuild. Every offseason was more about trying to slap duct tape across the team’s weaknesses and make one more playoff run.

That philosophy got the Saints nowhere except the fourth circle of salary-cap hell. And after veteran quarterback Derek Carr surprisingly retired in the offseason, Loomis was essentially left no choice.

The Saints are rebuilding whether the G M wants to or not—and it is from the ground up.

A full rebuild would allow the franchise to reset its roster and financial structure, providing a clearer path to sustained success. The organization must be patient, focusing on developing young players while addressing glaring weaknesses.

Though painful in the short term, a rebuild offers New Orleans its best chance to return to contention. By addressing foundational issues now, New Orleans can position itself for long-term success in the league.
