Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys earned their second win of the 2025 NFL season in Week 5, defeating Justin Fields and the New York Jets 37-22 to move to 2-2-1. Diggs helped lead one of the Cowboys’ strongest defensive performances of the year, holding Garrett Wilson to six catches while the defense recorded a season-high five sacks.
With 13:47 left in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, Fields was stopped for no gain by Cowboys rookie Donovan Ezeiruaku, leading to a turnover on downs. However, away from the play, tensions flared between Diggs and Jets receiver Arian Smith. After Smith headbutted Diggs, the Cowboys cornerback retaliated with a swing, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which was enforced between downs.
For his actions against Smith in Cowboys vs. Jets, the NFL announced that Diggs has been fined $12,172 for his first "striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing" offense. A second offense would lead to a $17,968 fine.
This isn’t the first time a Dallas player has been fined during the 2025 season. In fact, the Cowboys have now received ten fines so far, including one involving team owner Jerry Jones, who flipped off a fan in New York. In Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, linebacker Marist Liufau was fined $7,186 for a facemask penalty, while tackle Tyler Guyton received the same fine for the same offense as Diggs.
And in Week 2, wide receivers CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens were each fined twice for separate infractions. Tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford (taunting) and defensive end Sam Williams (facemask) were the final two.
"Trevon Diggs got caught throwing a shot at Arian Smith after a headbutt," Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins wrote on X. "He gets flagged. Everybody needs to calm down."
