It doesn't matter that the new NFL season hasn't started yet, because fans have already wagered on who they think will be crowned MVP in 2024.
Sure, Patrick Mahomes is coming off of back-to-back Super Bowl titles and is the +500 favorite at BetMGM and other major sportsbooks to win Most Valuable Player honors this year as the Kansas City Chiefs chase the elusive three-peat. But Mahomes isn't receiving the most bets at DK to win the award.
Here's who is.

The Lines reported that Houston Texans starter C.J. Stroud has received the highest ticket percentage at BetMGM at 11.7%. despite being listed far behind Mahomes at +1000. And this phenomenon isn't specific to one sportsbook, as Sports Illustrated also reported this week that the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year is also the most bet-on MVP candidate at DraftKings . Stroud is tied at DK for second-shortest odds with Josh Allen (+850).

Oddsmakers have seen MVP potential in Stroud since late last season as he made his run toward OROY honors. He finished his first year of professional football with 4,108 passing yards and a 63.9% completion rate for 23 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Stroud also had the "highest passing yards per game amongst all quarterbacks who played in at least nine games at 273.9," according to SI.
It should be kept in mind, however, that players who receive the most bets don't necessarily end up winning. Pittsburgh Steelers backup QB Justin Fields was reportedly one of the most bet-on players to win MVP ahead of the 2023 season, which left plenty of bettors unhappy as the Chicago Bears started off the season 0-4 and Fields quickly fell out of contention.
Want to watch Stroud compete against other MVP favorites before you place your bet? The Texans host Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 6 but don't face the Mahomes and the Chiefs until Dec. 21. Although hopefully by then you have decided whether to follow the trend and place your money on Stroud to be the 2024 MVP.
