The New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith faces ongoing police scrutiny following accusations of assault from a woman claiming to be his former partner. Authorities in Davie, Florida, responded to the incident after a 911 emergency call on Sunday, though no immediate arrests took place.

The situation has drawn attention across the league, prompting a measured initial reaction from NFL officials while the team itself has remained publicly silent.

Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene after the distress call, launching an investigation into the claims of battery. The probe continues as detectives gather more details, with the case remaining active. This development comes despite an earlier indication from police that the matter might have been resolved, highlighting the fluid nature of the review process.

In the recorded 911 call, the woman identified herself as Smith’s ex-girlfriend and told the dispatcher, “My ex-boyfriend just beat me up.” She later shared an Instagram video in which she alleged that Smith “beat my a** cause he HATES taking care of his special needs kid and can’t be left alone with him because he’d rather watch s*x online and play Call of Duty.”

The Davie Police Department initially signaled on Monday that the case was closed. However, officials reversed course shortly afterward, confirming further examination by detectives.

“We were informed [Monday] evening that, during review, it was determined that this case is being further investigated by detectives,” a police spokesperson told ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time.”

The NFL has taken notice of the allegations but offered only a concise response through a league spokesperson.

“We are aware of the matter and the club has been in contact with the league,” an NFL spokesperson told PFT via email. “We have no further comment at this time.”

New York Jets representatives have not issued any public statements regarding the situation as the investigation proceeds. The organization appears to be coordinating internally with league officials while awaiting additional developments from authorities.

Smith returned to the Jets organization this offseason on a one-year contract worth $3.3 million. The move marked a homecoming for the quarterback, who began his professional career with the team after being selected in the second round of the draft.

Despite recent challenges, many observers anticipated that Smith would secure the starting quarterback position for the upcoming season. His arrival came after a stint with the Las Vegas Raiders, during which he recorded 17 interceptions, raising questions about his consistency under center.

Earlier in his career, Smith experienced a notable resurgence while playing for the Seattle Seahawks. Over three consecutive seasons from 2022 to 2024, he guided the team to winning records and accumulated 71 passing touchdowns, reestablishing himself as a reliable starter in the league.

As the police investigation advances, the broader football community continues to monitor updates closely. Smith’s future role with the Jets and any potential league involvement will likely depend on the outcome of the active case in Florida.

For now, both the team and the NFL have adopted a cautious approach amid the unfolding events.
