Six NFL teams are now looking for a new head coach. Let’s check in on the latest with those teams and see which candidates they’re pursuing…
The Bears fired Matt Eberflus back in November, and their recent coaching search has included some high-profile names like Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel, former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and Iowa State coach Matt Campbell.
The Bears also requested to interview Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, but was denied by Dallas, thought the Cowboys can’t seem to decide whether they actually want to keep McCarthy or not. You can find their list of names to be interviewed here.
The Jags fired coach Doug Pederson, who has been with the team for the past three seasons. Jacksonville did, however, opt to keep general manager Trent Baalke.
The Jags plan to interview some of the same names as Chicago like Johnson, but also plan to speak with Green Bay Packers consultant/former Jets coach Robert Saleh and Buffalo Bills OC Joe Brady, among others. You can find their list of names to be interviewed here.
Not a ton has come out about interviews after the Raiders decided to fire coach Antonio Pierce, but it’s likely that they’ll try to interview Vrabel, Johnson and Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, among others.
One name that has popped up for Vegas is Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo. He’d be an interesting hire since he would be coming from a division rival.
New England let go of coach Jerod Mayo and OC Alex Van Pelt. For replacement options, the Pats have interviews scheduled or requested with Vrabel, Johnson, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC Byron Leftwich and Lions DC Aaron Glenn, among others. You can track the Pats’ candidates here.
New Orleans fired coach Dennis Allen back in November and is ramping up its coaching search now. The Saints’ options include Vrabel, Glenn, Brady, New York Giants OC Mike Kafka and Philadelphia Eagles OC Kellen Moore. See the full growing list here.
Legendary Saints quarterback Drew Brees already has his pick in mind for New Orleans’ next coach: he wants Glenn.
The Jets let go of coach Robert Saleh way back in October, and are also looking for a new GM as well. Recent coaching candidates for the Jets include Vrabel, Chiefs OC Matt Nagy, former Jets coach Rex Ryan and former Washington Commanders and Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera. Potential GMs include Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi and former Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff.
See the full list of coaching and GM candidates here.
The Cowboys don’t technically need a head coach, as they haven’t officially moved on from McCarthy yet. However, they haven’t committed to McCarthy, either. In the meantime, our guy Mauricio Rodriguez put together a list of realistic options, plus some fan favorites that could be considered.
