The Baltimore Ravens are under much more pressure than most people realize right now.
They're tabbed as one of the strongest teams in the league, even with a first-year head coach and an unproven coaching staff.
Moreover, they have yet to reach an agreement with their quarterback over his long-term future with the organization.
Lamar Jackson has yet to sign a contract extension, and he holds all the leverage in talks. That's why the word around the league is that the Ravens have until Week 1 to get a deal done, according to NFL insider Jason La Canfora.
“If he’s not extended by Week 1, I think he’s gone (in 2027),” one longtime personnel exec told La Canfora.
The Ravens unilaterally decided to restructure Jackson's deal to clear cap space for this offseason.
According to Over The Cap, that will leave them with an $84.4 million cap hit for next season.
That gives Jackson all the wiggle room and leverage to ask for as much money or as many guarantees as he wants in his new deal. If he doesn't get it, he can simply walk away after the 2027 season and leave them behind with a monumental cap hit.
This isn't the first time the Ravens have backed themselves into a corner by dragging out negotiations with Jackson, who doesn't have an agent.
And given how things ended last time around, it's hard to believe the future Hall of Famer will give them any sort of hometown discount.
