Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season is complete, and the San Francisco 49ers opened with a thrilling win over the division-rival Seattle Seahawks. Now, they look to carry that momentum into Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints and beyond.
One of the biggest standouts in the season opener was second-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who hauled in four passes from Brock Purdy for 108 yards. The performance highlighted the chemistry the duo built throughout training camp.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler surveyed NFL executives and scouts, asking to predict a potential breakout player for the 2025 season. Their pick: Pearsall.
The former first-rounder finished his 2024 rookie campaign with 31 receptions, 400 yards, and three touchdowns—despite missing the first six games after suffering a gunshot wound in a robbery attempt. With a (nearly) full offseason of work and a larger role in Kyle Shanahan's offense, expectations are soaring.
"I am high on Ricky and he should see plenty of targets -- he has to prove he can stay healthy, though," an NFC executive told Fowler.
With George Kittle sidelined for at least four games due to a hamstring injury and Jauan Jennings coming off a shoulder scare—though tests didn't show a significant setback—Pearsall may be called upon to become a primary target for Purdy.
If Week 1 is any indication, the 49ers' young receiver could be on the verge of a breakout sophomore season.
