Earlier this week, multiple writers mentioned that the New York Jets "will probably pass on the opportunity to land" controversial quarterback Brendan Sorsby in this year's supplemental draft for the NFL.
This is in part because "it’s debatable as to whether or not Sorsby is a better prospect than" Jets rookie and 2026 fourth-round draft pick Cade Klubnik.
For a piece published on Thursday morning, NFL insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom US spoke with multiple league executives who believe the Jets may be more than a little interested in Sorsby heading into the summer.
"The selection process is tilted in a manner that rebuilding teams have a higher spot in the picking order, so if multiple teams claim Sorsby in the same round, the team with the worst record gets his rights," La Canfora wrote about how the supplemental draft differs from the standard springtime draft. "And multiple NFL execs told me they believe that group of teams is the one to watch in the Jets."
Winning Sorsby's rights via the supplemental draft would cost the Jets their corresponding pick in next year’s draft. This year's supplemental draft will take place on or before July 16.
Some analysts view Sorsby as "a second-round, developmental" quarterback who may now be untouchable for multiple teams due to his much-discussed history with gambling. Additionally, clubs reportedly are worried that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell "will impose a significant suspension on Sorsby" later this year.
Such a ban shouldn't necessarily prevent the Jets from taking a flier on Sorsby, as Gang Green could start journeyman Geno Smith for much or even all of the 2026 season. The Jets could also turn to Klubnik later in the fall if Smith loses more than he wins through the end of November.
La Canfora added that Jets owner Woody Johnson "loves to compete with his crosstown Giants for tabloid coverage, proven over time, and he has arguably the worst QB room in the NFL, lacking a current true backup and with starter Geno Smith probably at the end of his career."
Meanwhile, one unnamed high-ranking NFL executive who is doing homework on Sorsby told La Canfora that Johnson "loves the attention."
Johnson would also love it if Sorsby would prove to be the franchise quarterback the Jets have lacked during their lengthy postseason drought.
