The NFL is reviewing a heated moment involving Baker Mayfield that could lead to further discipline.

The incident occurred during Saturday’s game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Carolina Panthers. Tensions rose early in the first quarter after a scramble by Mayfield.

With 3:23 remaining in the opening period, Mayfield ran out of bounds after an eight-yard gain. Panthers cornerback Mike Jackson made contact and then exchanged words with the quarterback. Officials flagged Jackson for taunting, enforcing a 13-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Carolina trailed 7-0 at the time.

The two players continued jawing until teammates stepped in to separate them. Under NFL rules, Jackson could face a fine of $11,593 for a first-time taunting offense. The league is expected to decide whether further punishment is warranted.

Jackson’s penalty stood out in an otherwise good season for the defender. He finished the regular season with 54 solo tackles and four interceptions. His 19 passes defended led the league, helping stabilize Carolina’s secondary. Despite the incident, Jackson remained one of the Panthers’ most consistent performers.

Mayfield, meanwhile, completed a solid season in Tampa Bay. He threw for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns while guiding the Buccaneers to an 8-9 record. His leadership and toughness were on display throughout the year, especially in close games.

The Buccaneers’ narrow 16-14 win kept their playoff hopes alive. However, the spotlight briefly shifted from postseason math to discipline. As the NFL reviews the exchange, the outcome will be worth watching.
