The Las Vegas Raiders unexpectedly became the funniest team of schedule-release week thanks to Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza.
The photos worked because they leaned fully into the awkward comedy of the team’s new quarterback room.
Cousins is the veteran bridge quarterback, Mendoza is the No. 1 overall pick, and the Raiders turned their partnership into a full “Step Brothers” bit.
As Adam Schefter shared, the Raiders released photos of Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza that immediately reminded fans of the 2008 comedy “Step Brothers.”
The staged shots showed the two quarterbacks posing together with intentionally awkward expressions, matching the odd-couple energy of the movie.
That was the joke. The Raiders took a potentially tense quarterback situation and made it look like Cousins and Mendoza had just become best friends.
It also fit the reality of their roles. Cousins arrived as the experienced veteran, while Mendoza represents the franchise’s future after going No. 1 overall.
Instead of ignoring the awkwardness, Las Vegas turned it into content, and fans loved how unserious it looked.
NFL fans quickly turned the photos into a comedy thread. One fan wrote, “This might be the greatest thing an NFL team has ever done.”
Another joked about the staged, clean-cut look, writing, “Kirk and Fernando look like they’re about to sell me life insurance.” The family-photo energy was impossible to miss, with one fan saying, “Raiders QB room looking like a family reunion.”
Others saw a darker football layer behind the joke. One fan wrote, “Somehow I don’t think they are going to be best friends or brothers after this season.”
Another fan said the funniest part was how natural it looked for both quarterbacks, writing, “The funny thing is this look like something they would actually do and not joking.”
That is why the photos landed so well. They were funny as a movie parody, but even funnier because Cousins and Mendoza somehow looked completely believable in it.
