The NFC West has been considered one of the toughest divisions in football for the past few seasons, but we're seeing a few clubs take a step back in 2023.
The Los Angeles Rams paying for their Super Bowl win with an aging roster, and the Cardinals could have a tough season ahead. Geno Smith and the Seahawks found surprising success in 2022, and the 49ers have been to the NFC Championship in three of the past four seasons despite questions at QB.
San Francisco is the understandable favorite out of the NFC West this year, with some books listing them as the favorites to advance to the Super Bowl from this conference.
The 49ers went 13-4 a season ago, with all three of Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Brock Purdy making starts at quarterback. It remains to be seen who begins this season at QB for San Francisco. Purdy suffered an elbow injury in the NFC Championship Game that may force him to miss regular season time, which could give Lance another chance to prove that taking him third overall was the right call.
2023 San Francisco 49ers schedule analysis
The calling card of the Niners has been a roster so strong that it hardly matters who is at quarterback — at least in the regular season, since you know, they haven't been able to win a Super Bowl with this equation. Still, the roster is loaded throughout, and in a potentially weak NFC West, they should find the wins necessary here.
Betting: Over 10.5 wins (-120)
The Seahawks had themselves a surprising 2022 season, finishing 9-8 and clinching one of the NFC's Wild Card spots.
Seattle drafted very well last season, getting immediate impact from a handful of rookies, and with a pair of first-rounders in this past draft, the pipeline in Seattle is looking encouragingly strong. The trio of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba is one we're excited to watch, along with the presence of RB Kenneth Walker. Geno Smith's job should be relatively simple: don't turn the ball over and let your playmakers do what they do best.
2023 Seattle Seahawks schedule analysis
The defense also has strong, quality pieces at all three levels. We're excited about the prospects out of Seattle this season.
We see a few tough games on the schedule this year, namely Cincinnati, Baltimore, Dallas and Philadelphia, but the Seahawks feel like a team that could legitimately win the division, so we'll be betting on another strong year for Pete Carroll and this team.
Betting: Over 8.5 wins (-130)
The Rams went 5-12 last season, but because of the Matthew Stafford trade, they weren't able to at least replenish with a high-end rookie in the draft. Los Angeles' philosophy of shipping off all their picks for impact players did work, given that they won the Super Bowl two years ago. However, they've paid a price, and we fear the tax is only just starting to hit here.
2023 Los Angeles Rams schedule analysis
There have been murmurs that Stafford may never quite be healthy again, and the offensive line and defense have both lost quality pieces that had aided that Super Bowl title.
Drawing the NFC East and AFC North likely won't do the Rams or anyone else in this division many favors, and it feels like another rough season is inbound. On the bright side, they have their first-round pick next year!
Betting: Under 6.5 wins (-110)
The Cardinals went 4-13 last season, the third-worst record in the NFL, and we expect a similar year in 2023.
Kyler Murray tore his ACL at the tail end of the season, and reports have suggested he may miss up to half the season. That is going to make it extremely difficult for Arizona to find success. They have some fine pieces, though DeAndre Hopkins and Zach Ertz are both on the wrong side of 30.
2023 Arizona Cardinals schedule analysis
Arizona has made some nice draft pieces to build a foundation, we're just not so sure they will be able to reap the rewards in 2023, especially if Colt McCoy is starting games.
We're also not sold on head coach Jonathan Gannon, signed this offseason, previously the defensive coordinator of Philadelphia. The Eagles defense was certainly exposed in the Super Bowl, and that has to fall on Gannon at some level.
With a tough schedule on the docket, expect a rough year for Arizona.
Betting: Under 4.5 wins (+110)
