NFL: Giants, Jets can't have fans in 2020 due to pandemic

If the New York Giants and New York Jets can play home NFL games this fall amid the worsening coronavirus pandemic, they will do so without fans attending MetLife Stadium.

On Monday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed that guidelines prohibiting large outdoor gatherings apply to all sports teams in the state.

The Giants and Jets released a joint statement reacting to Murphy's decision and announced that training camps and games will occur without spectators:

Today Governor Murphy announced that, due to the ongoing public health crisis, his Executive Order limiting outdoor public gatherings will apply to events at MetLife Stadium until further notice. This decision was reached after careful consideration of the current state of the COVID-19 crisis, in discussions with the Giants and Jets, and in consideration of the health and safety of our fans, players and staff, which will continue to be the primary focus for our teams.

We support Governor Murphy’s decision in the interest of public health and safety and, until circumstances change, both the Giants and Jets will play our games without the benefit of fans in attendance. Although we would prefer to have fans at MetLife Stadium for our games, we will continue to work with Governor Murphy's office and will provide updates if necessary.

Additionally, out of an abundance of caution, each team’s 2020 Training Camps and practices will not be open to the public.

Unlike the NBA, NHL, Major League Soccer, and the National Women's Soccer League, NFL players and staff will not live and work in a "bubble" format during the scheduled season. This has led many, including players, to question how the season can occur during the uncontrolled virus outbreak.

Clubs such as the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens are hoping to welcome fans at reduced capacities for games this fall. Meanwhile, Philadelphia has banned spectators at sporting events through at least next February.
