Back in October, New York Giants co-owner John Mara strongly suggested both general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were safe despite the club's struggles since the start of the 2023 season, in which New York ended with a 6-11 record. However, that was before the Giants fell to 2-8 on the ongoing campaign via a disheartening 20-17 overtime loss to the lowly Carolina Panthers (3-7) on Sunday.
During a Monday appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter indicated that Mara could blow things up in January or even sooner.
"If the draft were today, the New York Giants would have the No. 1 overall pick," Schefter explained, as shared by Andrew Holleran of The Spun. "...I don't know that anybody is safe in New York and I think anything is possible there."
Schoen and Daboll both joined the Giants in January 2022, and the two helped the club earn a playoff berth and a road postseason victory in their first campaign with the organization. However, New York has mostly been a mess since it signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year contract in March 2023.
Specifically, the Giants have gone 3-13 across Jones' last 16 starts. Big Blue can and likely will move on from Jones during the upcoming offseason, but he's hardly all that's ailing what may be the league's worst team this fall.
Schoen has been responsible for multiple noteworthy draft misses throughout his Giants tenure. The Athletic's Dan Duggan noted on Sunday that New York is somehow getting worse with Schoen and Daboll leading the charge. It's also no secret that Mara didn't love that Schoen was willing to let star running back Saquon Barkley leave the team in free agency this past March.
Barkley signed a three-year, $37.75M contract that could be worth up to $46.75M with $26M fully guaranteed to join the rival Philadelphia Eagles. He is now an Offensive Player of the Year Award candidate in his first campaign with Philadelphia.
It's unclear if Bill Belichick would have any interest in returning "home" to potentially save the Giants after he earned his first two career Super Bowl rings while working for the franchise from 1979 through the 1990 season. At this point, it's also silly to think Mara won't give Belichick a call if the Giants finish Week 18 last in the overall NFL standings.
