Reporter questions if Bill Belichick would choose Giants over Cowboys

Individuals such as former New England Patriots star Julian Edelman routinely suggest that Bill Belichick wants to end his coaching career with the New York Giants because of Belichick's admiration for the Giants and the fact that he earned his first two career Super Bowl rings serving as an assistant and later as defensive coordinator with the club from 1979 through the 1990 season.

For an article published on Tuesday, NFL reporter and analyst Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com mentioned that the Dallas Cowboys "might be a more attractive destination for Belichick" as the living legend chases the NFL record for career victories earned by a head coach (regular season and postseason combined) currently held by Don Shula.

Shula accumulated 347 total victories, while Belichick is at 333 overall wins. 

"Belichick loves Dak Prescott, who the Cowboys just locked up at least through 2027 with a lucrative contract," Slater explained. "Three seasons with Prescott in Dallas very well could be enough to get Belichick past Shula even if Belichick doesn’t win another Super Bowl."

Some within the NFL community began linking Belichick with the Cowboys last year before he was shown the door by Patriots owner Robert Kraft and before Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones decided to have head coach Mike McCarthy work through a "lame-duck" season. Under McCarthy, the Cowboys went 12-5 across each of the past three campaigns, and 1-1 Dallas once again possesses enough talent to at the very least participate in the league's next postseason tournament. 

As for the 0-2 Giants, they could be on the verge of a franchise reset that involves moving on from quarterback Daniel Jones, head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. In short, Big Blue likely isn't a coaching change and one offseason of roster modifications away from competing for much of note with or without Belichick. 

"There might be nothing more than nostalgia drawing [Belichick] to the Giants," Slater hypothesized. 

Belichick, 72, doesn't have to make any decision about his plans for 2025 anytime soon and can instead wait to see if Jerry Jones wants to make a win-now hire this coming winter. Of course, McCarthy could silence such chatter by guiding the Cowboys to the franchise's first Super Bowl berth since January 1996.
