While the New York Giants intend to start veteran Russell Wilson over rookie Jaxson Dart this coming September, discussions about when head coach Brian Daboll could turn to Dart will hover over the club throughout the summer.
According to Timothy Rapp of Bleacher Report, NFL Network league insider Daniel Jeremiah predicted during a Thursday appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" that Dart could take over as the Giants' starter for the club's Week 7 game at the Denver Broncos.
Jeremiah's take makes sense for multiple reasons. A New York team that ended last season at 3-14 begins the upcoming campaign with matchups against the Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles. It's not a stretch to suggest the Giants could enter Week 7 at 2-4 or worse.
Additionally, Big Blue's Week 6 game against Philadelphia is a "Thursday Night Football" showdown on Oct. 9. Thus, Dart would have some extra time after that contest to prepare for the Broncos in Denver on Oct. 19.
Daboll and Giants general manager Joe Schoen were both with the Buffalo Bills when they planned to sit Josh Allen through his rookie season, but then started him in Week 2 of the 2018 campaign. Jeremiah seems to believe history could somewhat repeat itself this coming fall.
"You just kinda listen to the words of Brian Daboll, and you got the sense that [Dart] was his guy. He's invested in him," Jeremiah added during the segment. "He seems to really, really like him. He had Josh Allen, and once they got him in there, they were able to learn through some of the mistakes and get to a really good place. It sounds a little different, the way he's talking about [Dart]. To me, that makes it sound like this isn't something that's a redshirt year for him as they hand the ball to Wilson for a full season. I think we're going to see a lot of Dart this year."
As of Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook continued to list Wilson as a -750 betting favorite to start New York's Week 1 game at Washington. Wilson doesn't seem to be in any danger of losing the QB1 gig early into the Giants' summer break, but one wonders if Dart could give Daboll something to think about by producing a few stellar preseason performances.
