The Titans released Jordan Elliott earlier this week. It was not initially clear what prompted the move, but updates have revealed the cause to be an incident which led to the veteran defensive tackle retrieving his gun from his parked car.
The situation was ultimately de-escalated without further issue, but it led to Elliott’s time in Tennessee coming to an abrupt end. A review of the matter was initiated by the NFL, and as expected there will be further inspection. The league has opened an investigation into Elliott, ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes.
Bringing a firearm to an NFL facility is a violation of league rules, as was confirmed in the aftermath of Elliott’s release. That has led to the expectation of a suspension being handed down. Elliott, 28, would be able to serve a suspension as a free agent before lining up a deal with his next team.
The seventh-year veteran served as a full-time starter during his final two seasons in Cleveland. After his rookie contract expired, Elliott joined the 49ers. He operated as a defensive regular in San Francisco from 2024-25, then followed Robert Saleh to Nashville this past offseason. The former third-rounder inked a two-year, $8MM deal on the open market. None of his scheduled 2027 compensation was guaranteed.
Over the course of his career, Elliott has totaled 67 starts and 107 combined regular and postseason appearances. The Missouri product has rarely made a significant impact against the pass, but his run defense has been relatively consistent. Interest could pick up once clarity emerges with respect to league discipline, but it would come as little surprise if teams were to wait until any potential suspension is handed down and then served before pursuing an Elliott signing.
