Jalen Carter had another big year for the Philadelphia Eagles this past season. The 24-year-old was named a Pro Bowler for a second straight year behind 33 combined tackles (21 solo), five tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits. Carter also registered 3.0 sacks and seven passes defended in 11 games played this past season, firmly establishing himself as one of the best defensive tackles in the NFL.

Carter played his part in the Eagles’ 23-19 wild card loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The former Georgia Bulldogs star logged three combined tackles (one solo), one tackle for loss and one QB hit. It wasn’t enough, though, as the Eagles saw a season-ending defeat that saw their title defense come to an end.

Carter was involved in a contentious incident in the 49ers game. It came on a trick play by San Francisco early in the fourth quarter. After taking the snap, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy handed the ball off to wide receiver Skyy Moore. Moore then flipped the ball back to Jauan Jennings, who threw an incredible 29-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey.

Jennings hit the deck just as McCaffrey reeled in one of the best catches of the season. Jennings, a former quarterback during his playing days at Blackman High School, took a hard hit from Carter, who came in late on his tackle. Carter was immediately flagged on the play for roughing the passer. The penalty was enforced between downs.

According to the NFL rulebook, “any physical acts against a player who is in a passing posture (i.e. before, during, or after attempting a pass) which, in the game official’s judgment, are unwarranted by the circumstances of the play will be called as fouls.”

A roughing the passer violation carries a 15-yard penalty. It may also be subjected to a fine from the NFL: $17,389 for a first offense and $23,186 for a second.

The NFL has reviewed Carter’s incident. The good news for the Eagles star is that he has not been fined for his personal foul against Jennings. The league’s decision was revealed via the game day accountability report, which was published on Saturday. Carter was not included in the list of fines from the wild card round.

Carter has already been fined twice this season. He was fined $57,222 for unsportsmanlike conduct against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. The Eagles star was also fined $11,593 for taunting against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3.
