NFL Makes Final Decision on Jaxson Dart Incident

After taking over the QB1 role for the New York Giants earlier this season, Jaxson Dart will be forced to miss his first game on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. The rookie QB is currently in the NFL’s concussion protocol after suffering a head injury in the Giants’ Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears last Sunday.

There was some optimism about Dart potentially starting against the Packers, but the former Ole Miss Rebels star was unable to recover in time for the Week 11 matchup. Jameis Winston will start in Dart’s place against Green Bay in what will be the veteran’s Giants debut. 10-time Pro Bowl QB Russell Wilson has been relegated to a backup role behind Winston.

Dart suffered the head injury in the third quarter of their loss to Chicago. The 22-year-old took a big hit late in the quarter but was able to play on. It wasn’t until the period ended that the Giants determined that Dart had sustained a concussion. He was immediately ruled out for the rest of the game.

The young quarterback was involved in another incident earlier in the game. Dart was sacked by Bears defensive tackle Andrew Billings in the second quarter, which resulted in a 10-yard loss for the Giants.

Billings, however, was a little too aggressive with his tackle. The Chicago DE grabbed hold of Dart’s facemask, which resulted in the QB’s helmet falling off as Dart hit the deck. Billings was flagged for roughing the passer. It negated that sack, giving the Giants a 15-yard gain and a first down.

The good news for Billings is that he will not face further punishment for his hit on Dart. The NFL announced the fines from Week 10 via the gameday accountability report on Saturday, and they have made a final decision on the Dart incident. Billings will not be fined for his facemask penalty in the Giants game.

Two of his Bears teammates were not as lucky as Billings, though. Defensive lineman Austin Booker was fined $5,818, while safety Kevin Byard was hit with a $23,186 sanction. Both fines were for unnecessary roughness for the use of the helmet.

The Bears will be back in action on Sunday as well. They face the Minnesota Vikings in an NFC North rivalry showdown.
