Despite a low hit that put Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert in harm's way, Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Alex Highsmith will avoid a fine from the NFL.
During the first half of a 25-10 Sunday night Steelers loss, Highsmith collided with Herbert's lower body after trying to rip under Chargers left tackle Austin Deculus, but the signal-caller got rid of the ball right before the Steelers defender arrived. Pittsburgh safety Kyle Dugger had also been racing in, ready to pop Herbert as he threw it.
Right away, Herbert looked around for a flag, but didn't get one. Bolts head coach Jim Harbaugh was displeased with the no-call, as well.
The NFL Officiating Department reviews every play from each contest. Roughing the passer can result in a $17,389 punishment for the first offense and a $23,186 fine for the second. Highsmith was docked nearly $16,400 for such a call two seasons ago.
Mike Tomlin's team will be without Highsmith on Sunday as it takes on Joe Flacco and the Cincinnati Bengals. The head coach didn't mention him during his Tuesday injury rundown, but Highsmith didn't practice this week due to a pectoral injury.
Highsmith played 72.6% of the Steelers' defensive snaps during the setback against the Chargers.
Highsmith had four sacks and a forced fumble over his past two outings, but will be replaced by Nick Herbig on Sunday. Former Ohio State Buckeyes star Jack Sawyer will be elevated to the No. 3 outside linebacker role in Highsmith's absence.
