Aidan Hutchinson and the Detroit Lions couldn't get it done in Week 9 of the 2025 NFL season, falling to 5-3 after a 27-24 loss to J.J. McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings in an NFC North showdown. McCarthy, in his first game since Week 2, finished the day with 143 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Hutchinson brought him down once for a sack.
With 7:41 remaining in the second quarter and the game tied at 14, McCarthy, with Hutchinson closing in, connected with Justin Jefferson for a short 2-yard gain. After the throw, Hutchinson stuck out his left leg in an attempt to bring McCarthy down but failed to make the tackle. Still, the former Michigan defensive end was flagged for unnecessary roughness for a “leg whip,” giving Minnesota 15 yards and a first down.
Typically in the NFL, players can be fined up to $17,389 for a first leg whip penalty, which can increase to $23,186 upon a second violation. However, after reviewing the incident further, the league decided not to fine Hutchinson for his hit on McCarthy.
Through nine weeks of the 2025 NFL season, only five players have been fined for a leg whip. In Week 1, Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet was charged $17,389. In Week 2, Dallas Cowboys tight end Breven Spann-Ford ($5,370), Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James ($17,389) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tackle Charlie Heck ($8,722) were all fined. And in Week 6, Cincinnati Bengals guard Dalton Risner was penalized $7,431.
While Hutchinson wasn't fined following the Lions' loss to the Vikings, one of his opponents was. Minnesota running back Aaron Jones was charged $23,186 for an illegal use of the helmet.
