NFL officials reportedly won't attend training camps

Roughly 24 hours after reports surfaced that the NFL Players Association informed union members all preseason games are canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, ESPN's Kevin Seifert wrote that league officials won't work training-camp sessions to avoid potential virus outbreaks among personnel.

Seifert added this means that members of the NFL Referees Association won't work on the field until Week 1 of the regular season, assuming the campaign gets underway, as planned, with a Sept. 10 showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans. 

The NFL and NFLRA haven't yet agreed to terms for what happens if one or more referees test positive for the virus during the season or how referees who wish to opt out of working amid the pandemic will be protected. 

Earlier this month, the Associated Press explained how at least 10 MLB umpires elected to not work this summer because of coronavirus-related fears. Umpires deemed high-risk for COVID-19 who aren't working will be paid for the year following an agreement between the league and MLB Umpires Association.
