Father time comes for all athletes. These 25 players could be headed for decline during the 2023 NFL season.

Plagued by injuries since his arrival in Seattle in 2020, Adams is no longer considered the star he was early in his career. The safety played only one game last season, and the Seahawks would just be satisfied with some contribution from the three-time Pro Bowler.

Campbell remains a force to be reckoned with due to his size, but he's no longer the dominant player that made six Pro Bowls. At age 37, Campbell could be finishing out his career this year with the Falcons.

The Chiefs moved on from Clark after his second Super Bowl victory, and he barely played in Denver before getting released. He played well in spurts last season but only recorded five sacks in 15 regular season games.

David has been one of the faces of the Bucs defense over the last 11 seasons, but his play has started to slip in his early 30s. The veteran linebacker still recorded 124 tackles last season, but there's been a clear decline in his speed.

Donald finally showed that he was human last season, missing six games due to injury and recording only five sacks. He returned for 2023 despite speculation that Donald would hang up his cleats, but the three-time Defensive Player of the Year is likely finished playing at that elite level at age 32.

Dupree struggled in two seasons with the Titans after cashing in due to his strong play in Pittsburgh. The Falcons defense has even less talent surrounding him, and injuries have limited Dupree to only 11 games in three consecutive seasons.

Ertz played only 10 games in what was supposed to be his first full season in Arizona. With an injury to Kyler Murray and the loss of offensive-minded head coach Kliff Kingsbury, the prospects for a major rebound from Ertz at age 33 look bleak.

Garoppolo was a winner in San Francisco over six seasons, but he also had a terrific supporting cast and a brilliant head coach in Kyle Shanahan. He does enter a familiar offense with head coach Josh McDaniels in Las Vegas, but Garoppolo is coming off a major leg injury with a shaky offensive line in front of him. The Raiders could turn to youth again if things go south early this season.

Gilmore remains a smart and reliable playmaker, but the decline has been clear in recent seasons following injury. He missed the Pro Bowl last year with Indianapolis for the first time since 2017, as the Colts secondary was routinely burned. Cowboys coordinator Dan Quinn could help revive Gilmore's career this season, but it's unfair to expect the same player that won Defensive Player of the Year with the Patriots in 2019.

Henry still poses a threat to opposing defenses whenever he gets the ball, but all the mileage on his tires has shown over the last two seasons. He missed significant time in 2021 to a foot injury and has averaged less than 4.5 yards per carry in back-to-back seasons.

Hopkins' production over the last two seasons has clearly slipped, along with time missed due to injury and suspension. His 11.2 yards per catch last season tied his career low, and the move to the conservative Titans offense probably won't help.

An excellent deep threat early in his career, Jones is more of a complementary receiver now in his early 30s. He had only 46 catches while averaging a mediocre 11.5 yards per reception last season with Jacksonville. Jones will play a prominent role for the Lions early this season with Jameson Williams suspended, but he might be unable to give Detroit big production.

There has been clear decline from Kamara over the last two years with a yards-per-carry average that hasn't exceeded 4.0 yards. Part of the issue has been the Saints poor quarterback play, but the wear and tear has also slowed Kamara. He missed time due to suspension early this season, posing another setback after the Saints signed Jamaal Williams and drafted Kendre Miller.

Mack won Defensive Player of the Year early in his career with the Raiders, but he's slowed down recently. After struggling to stay healthy with the Bears in 2021, Mack had only eight sacks in 17 games last season. He's become more of a complementary pass rusher than a player opposing teams gameplan around.

From first overall draft choice and Progressive Insurance spokesman to NFL backup by his fifth season, Mayfield has seen quite the whirlwind. He did get back on track with the Rams late last season after the Panthers released Mayfield, and has an opportunity to win the starting job in Tampa Bay this summer. Still, Mayfield's stock is headed in the wrong direction.

Mixon made the Pro Bowl in 2021, but last season was a disappointment with only 3.9 yards per carry and failure to reach 1,000 yards rushing in 14 games. While Cincinnati and Mixon agreed to an augmented contract, the team might have drafted his heir apparent in Chase Brown.

Peters seemed to lose a step last season after missing all of 2021 due to injury. As a result, the Ravens moved on from the veteran cornerback, but he will try to solidify a Raiders secondary desperate for help.

Rodgers was the talk of the offseason after moving on from Green Bay, but tore his Achilles in Week 1. Not only did the Packers have his replacement ready in former first-round pick Jordan Love, but Rodgers showed clear sign of decline last season with only 217 passing yards per game and 12 interceptions. The hope is that Rodgers will show some semblance of his former self when he returns.

Minnesota's defense continues to struggle, and they've moved on from many of their veterans in recent years. Smith is one of the few exceptions, but the 12-year pro has also shown signs of decline and injuries.
Tim Heitman / USA Today Sports Images
Smith is a game-changing lefty tackle when he's on the field, but those times have been few and far between recently. He played only two games in 2020 and four games last season, and Smith will turn 33 in December. The Cowboys would be well-advised to have a backup play ready again this year.

One year after winning the Super Bowl, Stafford went 3-6 as a starter and missed eight games due to injury. Stafford also struggled when he did play, with 10/8 TD/INT, and the Rams continue to shed talent around him.

Thielen could be Carolina's No. 1 receiver entering the year, but the decline is still clear. After years of nagging hamstring issues, Thielen averaged less than 11 yards per catch in back-to-back seasons with the Vikings and has mainly been a Red Zone target lately.

The writing is on the wall for the end of Tannehill's career in Tennessee after the team drafted Will Levis this year. Tannehill struggled last season, going 6-6 as a starter and missing significant time due to an ankle injury.

Wagner continues to play at a high level, but isn't quite the player that he was earlier in his career. His streak of Pro Bowls ended at eight last season as the Rams defense decline around him. Seattle hopes Wagner has juice left at age 33.

Ward missed time due to injury and saw less time on the field when he was healthy in San Francisco last season. The long-time 49ers starter followed coordinator DeMeco Ryans to Houston and will provide veteran leadership for a young team, but it remains to be seen if he's still a starter-quality player at age 32.
