26-Year NFL Reporter Parting Ways With ESPN
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL is arguably the most popular professional sports league in America. Part of what makes it so special is the people who cover it for the media.

One of those people has been an NFL reporter for the last 26 years. Sadly, this reporter and ESPN have reportedly decided to part ways. Read below to find out who it is and if this reporter is retiring.

Ed Werder and ESPN to Part Ways

This morning, Ed Werder of ESPN released a statement on social media regarding his current situation at ESPN. In this statement, Werder confirmed that he will be parting ways with ESPN after covering the NFL for the network over the last 26 years. Here is what he had to say:

“For 26 years, I’ve had the privilege of reporting on the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys with an ESPN microphone. But that time is coming to an end… My ESPN career was highlighted by being assigned to cover 20 consecutive Super Bowls and included having my contributions honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame… My gratitude to all who have been in the audience, and I remain thankful to have been provided the most coveted platform in broadcast journalism.”

Fans and Media Reaction

Of course, Werder’s fans and his colleagues all had strong reactions to this news. Here are some of the most notable comments by those people following his statement:

“Ed! The world knows how talented you are at your job. A pro’s pro. But everyone might not be aware that you are an even better human, kind and generous with your reporting, even to a newcomer with a “non-traditional” background. Going to miss you with us, esp Sunday mornings.” -Stefania Bell

“A Hall of Fame run. But also: a kind, whipsmart reporter’s reporter with a wicked sense of humor to boot. Here’s to the next brilliant chapter. Thinking of you today.” -Michele Steele

“Thank you, Ed, for paving the way for so many of us in sports journalism. I know you’re not done — but it’s still worth celebrating a Hall of Fame run at ESPN! Congratulations!”

-Jeff Darlington

“I had the tremendous pleasure of interacting with you during my years in the league, I am so happy that we still interact – all my wishes and hopes for happiness in your next [ad]venture, I can’t wait to follow along – and (to keep saying) hi.” -Amy Trask

Ed Werder Hints at Reporting Future

Despite his emotional farewell, Werder wanted to make it clear that he does not intend this to be the end of his career as an NFL reporter. In his statement, Werder mentions that he is confident he will find a new home for the next chapter of his career:

“I will immediately begin considering other opportunities to continue my work covering the NFL… While this marks the end of my partnership with ESPN, I expect to continue working because, as so many studio hosts have proclaimed – and I still devoutly believe – ‘Ed Werder has more.'” -Ed Werder
