Fair or not, the perception exists that the Cleveland Browns settled when they hired former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken as their head coach not long after Browns co-owner Jimmy Haslam reportedly gave general manager Andrew Berry more authority.
It sounds like Haslam could part ways with both Monken and Berry if the Browns endure yet another losing season.
Per a recent piece produced by NFL reporter Henry McKenna of Fox Sports, both Monken and Berry are on the "hot seat" months ahead of the start of the 2026 season.
"Yeah, that’s right, they could both get fired," McKenna wrote. "Monken hasn’t coached a single down yet, but the Browns struggled to attract a top candidate in the 2026 hiring cycle, mainly because of the team’s salary cap issues and quarterback issues — which all tie back to [Deshaun Watson]. If they have a strong, young team with a high draft pick in a QB-rich 2027 draft, the Browns could hire a big-name coach or hot coordinator prospect."
Monken is seemingly preparing to start Watson over 2025 rookie Shedeur Sanders in September, which would be a win-now move for a team that allegedly plans to move on from Watson next offseason. That said, Cleveland reportedly could make star pass-rusher Myles Garrett available for trade between June 1 of this year and the fall trade deadline.
Trading Garrett to acquire assets for what is currently a highly rated 2027 draft class could make the Cleveland job more appealing to a top-tier coaching candidate. Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling of Pro Football Network noted that at least one team has fired a first-year head coach across each of the past five seasons.
Most recently, the Las Vegas Raiders moved on from Pete Carroll after a single campaign.
"Think about how the Chicago Bears attracted Ben Johnson with a well-timed hire a year after selecting QB Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft," McKenna added. "It’s starting to feel clear that Sanders is not a part of the Browns’ plan..."
In short, it sounds like Watson or Sanders may have to play the best football of their Browns tenures for Monken (and maybe Berry) to be employed by the team at this time next year.
