Indianapolis Colts fans attending Sunday’s rout of the Miami Dolphins may not have seen many Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa jerseys at Lucas Oil Stadium.
By the sound of things, that’ll be routine at stadiums nationwide this season. The NFL released its annual list of the top-50 player jersey sales, and no Miami Dolphins players made the list, which spanned from March 1 through July 31.
According to UPI’s Al Butler, the Dolphins had a top-50 player every year dating back to 2020, when Tagovailoa cracked the list as a rookie. Tagovailoa and Hill each made the top 50 last season.
Jaylen Waddle joined the duo in 2023, while Waddle and Hill both appeared in 2022.
The NFLPA’s complete list of top jersey sales is fascinating, with Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders (No. 5) leading all rookies and Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean (No. 6) selling more jerseys than Patrick Mahomes (No. 7) and Lamar Jackson (No. 8).
(Also, Travis Kelce only ranked 36th. Do Swifties have some bad blood with Fanatics!?)
Still, it’s strange to think that neither Tagovailoa nor Hill finished among the top 50. The argument about the Dolphins missing the playoffs hurting their chances only goes so far when one considers that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy finished 31st. In fact, New York Giants receiver Malik Nabers placed 26th after the Giants went 3-14!
It was bad enough that the Dolphins looked completely outmatched and lethargic in a 33-8 loss to the Colts. Respectfully, the reality that Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving (No. 45) made the list but no Dolphins players did is embarrassing.
If people aren’t buying Dolphins jerseys now, then we don’t expect that to change if Sunday afternoon is a sign of things to come. Miami hosts Drake Maye and the New England Patriots next Sunday in a battle of 0-1 clubs.
