NFL schedule-makers show Packers some early love

The Packers dealt star quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the Jets this offseason, but their 2023 schedule could make a rebuild more bearable.

On Thursday, the NFL released the 2023 schedule. Per NFL Research, Green Bay has the 24th-most-difficult schedule, which should bode well for new starting quarterback Jordan Love.

"With six games against the NFC North and four against the NFC South, the lack of defensive powerhouses could work in Love's favor," wrote ESPN fantasy and betting analyst Eric Moody. "And the favorable schedule could lead to the Packers having a winning record halfway through the season."

In their first five games, the Packers will face opponents who missed the playoffs last season. Per Pro Football Reference, four of the five teams (Falcons, Raiders, Bears and Lions) ranked 23rd or worse in scoring defense last season.

The inexperienced Love has an opportunity to pick up early wins, which could be a huge confidence boost. In three seasons, he has only played in 10 games, starting one. He has completed 50-of-83 passing attempts (60.3 percent) and thrown for three touchdowns. He also has three interceptions.

Although Green Bay went 8-9 and missed the playoffs last season, it has the pieces to rebound with good QB play. Head coach Matt LaFleur is  47-19 in four seasons. Wide receiver Christian Watson could break out after a rookie season in which he tied for 15th in receiving TDs with seven in 14 games.
