Micah Parsons wasn’t even fully healthy in his Green Bay Packers debut, but still managed to turn All-Pro Detroit Lions edge rusher Penai Sewell into a turnstile.
Parsons played in 34 snaps in Week 1, posting a sack and one tackle but forcing Lions quarterback Jared Goff itno a pivotal third down incompletion and applying heavy pressure on a throw that Packers defensive back Evan Williams intercepted.
Needless to say, if this was a glimpse of what defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has at his disposal, Parsons and the Packers’ defense have the potential to be among the most dominant and disruptive in the sport.
Even though Parsons did stack the stat sheet on Sunday, his performance sent ripples across the NFL.
One current scout says it’s obvious to see Parsons’ impact.
“It’s priceless,” an AFC scout told me, of the impact Parsons’ pressure has on all three levels of a defense. “You can be aggressive, knowing the ball is coming out. It also creates off-target throws, too. You saw today how that pressure affected Goff. They couldn’t push the ball down the field.”
The production is going to come, for Parsons, who now has one sack in one game with the Packers after compiling 52.5 through his first four seasons in Dallas and posting a 23 percent pass-rush-win-rate in 2024. But, in just one game, Parsons showed just how disruptive and dominant his pressure can be on opposing quarterbacks and offenses.
Moreover, the trade to acquire Parsons sent ripple effects across the locker room and seems to have elevated the culture around a roster that’s built on playmakers such as Jordan Love, Josh Jacobs, Tucker Kraft, a collection of young receivers, and dominant homegrown talent on defense.
“[Trading for Parsons] let the guys know that this organization is all-in on winning right now,” Packers running back Josh Jacobs told the CBS post-game show. “I think that’s something that’s very important, to the morale of the guys, especially working your butt off every day in the offseason, and you add a guy that’s so dynamic, like Micah, to a defense that’s already dynamic, the sky’s the limit.”
